Skipton Swimarathon Appoints First Patron

Skipton Swimarathon has appointed Roger Allsopp as its first patron in time for the 2013 event, which takes place between 2nd and 6th October. Roger was an inspirational choice as last year's Ambassador, becoming the public face of the event.

Hailed as one of the Independent newspaper's 100 outstanding people whose charitable work makes the UK a happier place and the oldest person to swim the channel, the 71 year old Guinness World Record holding swimmer is also a retired breast cancer surgeon and grandfather, as well as being one of Guernsey's best known and loved personalities.

As Patron, Roger's role will be to help promote the fundraising aims and highlight the beneficiaries of the event. The organisers are hoping that with Roger's help more and more swimmers will join in raising funds for local good causes. Commenting on his appointment, Roger said: "Swimming is such an enjoyable part of my life, and I am delighted to be able to help once again promote the Skipton Swimarathon as a fun filled family event."

Skipton Swimarathon Chairman Steve Hogg commented: "We are thrilled to have Roger as our patron, and we know that lots of people, young and old, will be motivated to take part because of his involvement."

Set to take place again this year at the Beau Sejour Centre, the event has become a permanent fixture in the island's charity events calendar.
