Skipton Swimarathon smashes last year’s figure

The Skipton Swimarathon committee has announced that funds raised this year for local charities has now exceeded the £65,000 mark. Donations have continued to trickle through since the completion of the Skipton Swimarathon earlier this month, raising funds for the G.S.P.C.A.

The remainder of the funding will be split between other local charitable causes chosen by the Lions Club of Guernsey and the Guernsey Round Table.

Manager of the G.S.P.C.A, Steve Byrne, said: “The G.S.P.C.A. had a great time supporting the Swimarathon and really got into the spirit of things by entering a team! We are so thankful to be the beneficiary of this year’s Skipton Swimarathon, the money raised will be spent on new pools for our sea life, including rescued seals.”

John Stuart, Chairman of the committee, said: “The amount of money raised increased on last year, as did the number of miles covered. In total 1,853 people swam lengths for charities, and even though that was 126 fewer than in 2023, more was raised than at last year's event.

“The number of miles swam also improved, with 23 more kilometres being swum than the previous year.  Maybe this shows that the population of Guernsey is getting fitter”, he joked.

Skipton International, once again, provided not only full financial support, but marketing, PR and event experience.

Chief Commercial officer, Charlotte Dunsterville, commented: “The Skipton Swimarathon is an event I am extremely proud of partnering. Our colleagues enjoy being so actively involved and, as a bank at the heart of the Guernsey community, it is a natural fit for us. Long may it continue!”

A full presentation for all trophy winners will be taking place at Beau Sejour on Wednesday 16 October at 6-7pm, and all are welcome to come along. Those who weren’t able to collect their swimming medals at the time of participating can also collect them at this event.
